The same day Nebraska opened its season, the NCAA issued a 16-game suspension to Cornhuskers forward Derrick Walker on Wednesday for an unspecified rules violation at his previous school.
The 6-foot-8 junior sat out last season after transferring from Tennessee, where he averaged 1.4 points and 1.7 rebounds in 64 games over two seasons.
Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg said he knew of Walker's "mistake" while with the Volunteers, but he had hoped that the suspension would be shorter since the 2020-21 season is only 27 games instead of the usual 31 games.
"Since arriving at Nebraska, Derrick Walker has been phenomenal at owning up to a mistake he made prior to coming here," Hoiberg said in a statement. "He was transparent throughout the recruiting process and acknowledged his mistake. In turn, we told him confidently we would support and fight for him."
The Cornhuskers (1-0) began the season Wednesday with a 102-55 win against McNeese State in Lincoln, Neb.
"Regardless of the outcome of any further appeals, we will continue to support Derrick and get him as ready as possible for when he is eligible to compete," Hoiberg said. "I know Derrick is in a much better place today than when he arrived at Nebraska, and he is a valuable member of our team on and off the court."
