Pinch hitter Jorge Alfaro's drove in the go-ahead run with a 10th-inning double and the Miami Marlins defeated the Washington Nationals 3-1 on Wednesday night, snapping a four-game losing streak.
Lewis Brinson started the 10th inning as a pinch runner for Joe Panik on second base, and Sandy Leon sacrificed him to third. Brad Hand (5-3) walked Jon Berti and Alfaro lined Hand's first pitch for a double, scoring Brinson. Miguel Rojas followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.
Dylan Floro (3-4) pitched two scoreless innings for the win and Yimi Garcia pitched the 10th for his 14th save.
Washington had won three straight.
Nationals starter Erick Fedde bounced back from a horrid outing against the Padres -- six runs in 1 1/3 innings -- and held the Marlins to one unearned run on four hits in six innings.
Nick Neidert, recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville, made the start for Miami in place of Sandy Alcantara, who is on the bereavement list. Neidert pitched five innings and gave up a run on three hits. He struck out two, walked three and was helped by three double plays.
In the second inning, each team got two runners aboard with two outs but failed to convert.
The Marlins loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth but only came away with one run.
Starling Marte led off with a double just inside the first-base bag. Adam Duvall followed with a hard grounder that third baseman Josh Harrison bobbled, with Marte holding at second, and Jesus Aguilar walked to load the bases. But Panik grounded into a double play, scoring Marte, and Leon grounded out.
The Nationals got the run right back. Harrison walked and with Andrew Stevenson up with two outs, Harrison ran on a 2-2 pitch and Stevenson lined a double over the head of right fielder Duvall, scoring Harrison. Marte's sliding catch of Tres Barrera's liner kept the game tied.
Juan Soto led off the Washington sixth with a single but was quickly erased on a double play.
