Free agent linebacker Mychal Kendricks was sentenced to one day in jail and three years of probation for insider trading in 2018.
Kendricks must also serve 300 hours community service, Judge Gene Pratter ruled Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
The sentence was expected to be closer to three years (30 to 37 months) based on court precedent.
Kendricks began serving his one-day sentence on Thursday.
The 30-year-old Kendricks is unsigned as training camps begin and played for the Cleveland Browns when the charges were announced three years ago.
An investment analyst for Goldman Sachs, Damilare Sonoiki, entered a guilty plea in 2018 for illegally informing Kendricks about corporate acquisitions that his bank was advising prior to public announcements in conversations that took place in 2014.
In the complaint, the district attorney claimed Kendricks benefited to the tune of $1.2 million in illegal profits by purchasing securities in the four companies that were about to be acquired based on Sonoiki's advice.
Kendricks was suspended eight games by the NFL and was released by the Browns when charges were announced in 2018 before ever playing a game with the franchise.
He signed with Seattle and played a total of 18 games with the Seahawks and finished his two seasons with the team on injured reserve. Last season, Kendricks agreed to join the Seahawks' practice squad before being signed by the Washington Football Team.
