Former Gonzaga star guard Joel Ayayi was claimed off waivers by the Washington Wizards and will serve as a two-way player, the team announced Sunday.
Ayayi, an undrafted free agent, signed a two-way contract with the Los Angeles Lakers in early August and played in five preseason games, averaging just under 10 minutes and not even one point per game.
Ayayi averaged 8.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per game in three seasons for Gonzaga, which lost the NCAA title game to Baylor, before declaring for the draft and forgoing his senior season. As a junior, he averaged 12 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists in just over 31 minutes per game.
The Wizards already have a Gonzaga teammate of Ayayi's, having drafted Rui Hachimura with the ninth overall pick in 2019.
