Derrick Henry has been a perfect fit with the Ravens, and their partnership just got an extension.
The Ravens and Henry reached agreement Wednesday on a two-year, $30 million extension that would put Henry in purple through the 2027 season, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.
It's reportedly the richest deal in NFL history for a running back over 30 years old. Henry turned 31 in January.
The $15 million per year would also be the third-highest running back contract in the league, trailing only the Philadelphia Eagles' Saquon Barkley ($20.6 million) and San Francisco 49ers' Christian McCaffrey ($19 million).
Henry showed last season that he's the exception to the rule when it comes to running backs aging. He finished second in the league in rushing yards with 1,921, trailing Barkley's 2,005. Henry averaged a career-high 5.9 yards per carry and finished tied for the NFL lead in rushing touchdowns (16).
The Henry-Lamar Jackson running duo proved nightmarish for opponents, and Henry was a monster down the stretch and in the playoffs. He posted 186 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the Wild-Card playoff win against the Steelers and 84 yards and another touchdown in the divisional loss in Buffalo.
But Henry's impact went beyond the stats and on-field production. His professionalism and work ethic made him an instant leader and earned the respect of teammates, coaches, and the front office.
General Manager Eric DeCosta suggested earlier this offseason that a contract extension could be on the way for Henry. The Ravens have multiple foundational players they want to reach long-term deals with, and they reportedly crossed Henry off the list before Organized Team Activities even began.
"Derrick is just a phenomenal worker. He's a pro. He does everything the right way, the way that he practices, the way that he takes care of his body, his mentality on the field, his leadership, his talent he's freakishly talented his combination of size and speed," DeCosta said after the 2024 season ended.
"He was just a perfect player for us last year. [He was] the right addition, and he brought a lot to the table on the field and also off the field with intangible qualities. We're blessed to have him, and I would expect his successes last year to continue this year."
