This is the second time that the NFL's regular season overtime rule has been changed since 2022

NFL owners have passed the rule making playoff overtime rules also apply to regular season games. Both teams will now get to possess the ball in overtime even if a touchdown is scored on the first possession of overtime. Overtime in regular season will remain 10 minutes, compared to 15 minutes in the postseason.

This is the second time that the NFL's regular season overtime rule has been changed since 2022.

Prior to 2022, if the team which possessed the ball first in overtime made a field goal or scored a touchdown on first drive, the other team did not have a chance to possess the ball. In 2022, the overtime rule was changed to allow both teams to possess the ball if a touchdown was not scored on the first possession. Starting in 2025, both teams will get to possess the ball in overtime no matter what happens on the first drive.

Teams that won the coin toss in overtime have a 30-17-2 record since 2022:

• 12-4 W-L in 2024, 5-8 in 2023, 13-5-2 in 2022
• No NFL game has ended in a tie over the last two seasons

The Chiefs (6-0 W-L) are the only undefeated team in overtime games since 2018. Kansas City has won the overtime coin toss in 5 of 6 overtime games since 2018.

The Bears, Bills, Patriots and Broncos are each winless in overtime since 2018 (each 0-4). Buffalo is 0-4 in overtime despite winning the overtime coin toss in three of four such games since 2018.
