Did the Cowboy's do enough in free agency to pick the best player available at No. 12 in the upcoming draft instead of reaching for a lower-ranked player at a position of need?Michael Shafer/ Sparks, NV
Mickey:Mostly yes, they have. But this does not preclude the Cowboys finding an inexpensive pickup of a veteran wide receiver or sweetheart deal for a veteran backup offensive tackle type. And while this won't affect the draft, but as Stephen Jones said from the NFL Meetings earlier this week, signing and or trading for a more veteran backup quarterback to compete with Will Grier still is a free-agent priority. But, nevertheless, when the Cowboys get to No. 12 this should be a pure draft, meaning not having to desperately reach for one player. And traditionally, the Cowboys have not done that when drafting in the top half of the first round, only in the late 20s when basically taking a player with a second-round grade that usually didn't work out so swell.
Tommy:I think they're a move or two away from doing that. I'm looking at wide receiver, cornerback and defensive tackle as three positions that could use an extra body or two before I'd feel comfortable just taking the best player available, but that's just me. The good news for the Cowboys is with the 12th pick, they might be able to get two birds with one stone by picking one of the top players available at a position of need, and not really have to reach for a player that's lower on the board.
