Looking at the Raiders' wide receiver room, "The Slot Machine" cold provide some stability back to that position.
Jakobi Meyershas experience playing slot receiver, lining up there for nearly 300 snaps in 2024. However, he excelled more at wideout with 591 snaps there and notched his first season over 1,000 receiving yards in his career. On the other side of the field,Tre Tuckerlined up at wideout for nearly 75 percent of his total snap count.Brock Bowersdemanded the most attention of any Raiders' pass catcher in the slot last season, however the versatile tight end is bound to be moved all over the field in Chip Kelly's offense.
General Manager John Spytek confirmed this week at Annual League Meetings that the Raiders met with Renfrow, but did not reveal anything further about the visit. In 2021, Renfrow was a Pro Bowler and regarded as one of the more masterful route runners in the NFL. As the Raiders went 10-7 and clinched a playoff berth that season, he was the leading receiver with 103 receptions, 1,038 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.
"We were just visiting and checking in on him," Spytek said. "I'll just say he's in a really good spot now where he wants to continue his career. We would be remiss if we didn't think about it."
I'm honestly surprised Asante Samuel Jr. is still a free agent considering his production with the Los Angeles Chargers.
In his first three seasons in the league, he totaled at least 10 pass deflections each year along with six total interceptions in that span. His fourth season came to an abrupt end as he suffered a shoulder injury in Week 4 that placed him on injured reserve.
Admittedly, he might not fit the current trend Pete Carroll aims to create in the secondary. The Raiders seem to be prioritizing physically imposing defense backs with the signings ofJeremy Chinn,Lonnie Johnson Jr.andEric Stokesthis offseason. Samuel Jr. stands at 5-foot-10, 180 pounds. Nevertheless, considering he provides youth and tools to excel in coverage, there's still a possibility the Raiders could take a swing on him.
I'm aware there's many people that prefer drafting running backs that split carries in college, believing it leads to longevity in the league. A solid case can be made for this philosophy considering the success of James Cook, Jahmyr Gibbs and Raiders' 2019 first-round pick Josh Jacobs, who all shared the backfield at their respective schools.
However, a stronger case can be made for drafting a workhorse back out of college. The five top rushers in the NFL last season averaged 631.4 carries in their collegiate careers, including Jonathan Taylor who totaled nearly 1,000 carries in three seasons at Wisconsin. Derrick Henry, who just rushed for 1,921 yards in his ninth NFL season, led the nation in carries with 395 in his Heisman Trophy winning season in 2015. Ashton Jeanty is above that average mark with 750 career carries 374 of those in 2024.
So with that being said Darwin, all a team can do is draft a player based off their college tape and the potential they believe they can reach.
