The No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft has appeared in 12 games during his career

The Los Angeles Chargers on Friday agreed to terms with quarterback Trey Lance.

Here are five things to know about Lance:

1. Coming from Dallas

The 24-year-old quarterback joins the Bolts after a pair of seasons in Dallas.

Lance was a member of the Cowboys after being acquired in a trade prior to the 2023 regular season, serving a reserve role for most of his time there.

2. Recent NFL experience

Lance does have some NFL experience under center in his young career.

The quarterback has appeared in 12 total games and started five of them, the most recent coming in the Cowboys' regular season finale last season.

Lance has totaled 1,063 passing yards, five touchdowns and four interceptions to go along with 276 rushing yards and a touchdown in his appearances during the regular season.

3. Former Top-3 pick

Prior to his time in Dallas, Lance entered the NFL as a top pick for the 49ers.

San Francisco selected the quarterback No. 3 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, making him the third at his position to be picked.

He spent from 2021 until he was traded before the 2023 season with the 49ers, finishing 2-2 as a starter and appearing in eight total games.

4. Top QB in FCS

Lance attended FCS powerhouse North Dakota State and made his mark in just over a season at the school.

The quarterback started all 16 games during the 2019 season for the Bison and led them to a record-setting 16-0 year that was capped off with the 2020 FCS Championship, a game where he won the Most Valuable Player Award.

He finished that year with 2,786 passing yards, 28 touchdowns and no interceptions, setting the NCAA all-divisions record for most passing attempts in a complete season (287) without an interception. He also tacked on 1,100 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns.

Lance took home the Walter Payton Award as the most outstanding offensive player in the FCS and the Jerry Rice Award as the FCS's best freshman.

5. Dual-sport athlete

A Minnesota native, Lance starred at Marshall High School on the gridiron and on the hardwood.

Lance was a three-year starting quarterback for his school, earning all-district honors each of the years. He finished his prep career passing for 3,026 yards and a school-record 33 TDs in his career with 1,177 rushing yards and 18 TDs.

Lance was also a team captain on the school's basketball team, where he earned all-conference honors as well.
