The Chicago Cubs want Matt Shaw to get a little more seasoning. According to The Athletic, the Cubs are sending the rookie third baseman to the minors.
The No. 13 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, Shaw broke camp with Chicago and was named the team's starter at third.
Shaw started all but three games at the hot corner for the Cubs and was just 10-for-58 (.172) with two extra-base hits, including a home run, and three RBIs. He had only one multiple-hit game -- garnering two on April 2 in Sacramento.
Shaw, considered the top prospect in the Cubs system by MLB Pipeline, had three hits in his last 24 at-bats, although had singles in his last two contests.
Selected out of the University of Maryland, Shaw moved up the chain quickly, making his way to Triple-A for 35 games in 2024. Overall in 121 minor league games last season he slashed .284/.379/.488 with 21 homers.
Gage Worman started two games for the Cubs at third this season and is 2-for-9. Veteran Justin Turner, who has mainly played first base and designated hitter, has started one. Turner is 5-for-29 (.172) with no extra-base hits.
The Cubs continue a three-game series at the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night.
