The quarterback room behind Tua Tagovailoa underwent a remodel this offseason, starting with free agent Zach Wilson and now seventh-round draft choice Quinn Ewers.
The 231st overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Ewers started for three seasons at the University of Texas under the architect of one of college football's most pro-style attacks in Longhorns Head Coach Steve Sarkisian.
Ramping up the learning curve
It's not how high you get drafted, but rather where you land; at least that's how the adage goes. If that truism holds form then Ewers found an ideal landing spot.
"We run a lot of stuff that Miami does," Ewers said during his post-draft media availability. "We get stuff that Miami does, and we installed it at Texas. It's definitely going to help...running some of the same concepts."
Shifts, motions, spacing manufactured through vertical and horizontal stretch. Many of the elements Ewers will see during his rookie season will be similar to what he experienced as a collegian; not to mention one of the game's best processors to study under.
"He knows the offense so well and his ability to anticipate throws is fun to watch," Ewers said of Tagovailoa. "He's throwing to guys before they even enter the window. They are three yards behind a linebacker, but he knows exactly where these guys are going to come and where these guys are going to go."
Big game experience
Playing for the University of Texas comes with quite the spotlight. Ewers played in the College Football Playoffs in 2025 with wins over Clemson and Arizona State (the latter an overtime thriller). Ewers also scored wins on the road in Ann Arbor against the Michigan Wolverines in 2024, and at Alabama in 2023, throwing for a total of six touchdowns without a turnover in the two games combined.
"He's a very calm guy who doesn't get affected by crowd noise," Sarkisian said.
Ewers went 28-9 over 37 career starts at Texas. The 6-2 right-armed fireballer threw 68 touchdowns to 24 interceptions with 9,128 yards during his time in Austin.
Unique arm talent
Watching Ewers play, it's evident that there's baseball in his background. His ability to slingshot the football without a lot of movement in his body looks like that of a shortstop sure enough, (which we learned, during his introductory press conference) that's exactly where played.
From Dane Brugler's The Beast 2025 Draft Guide: "comfortable delivering dots from off-platform; able to access various arm angles and release points without sacrificing velocity."
