CHARLOTTE The Panthers made a series of roster moves on Thursday, including releasing veteran outside linebackerJadeveon Clowney.

The 32-year-old Clowney tied for the team high here with 5.5 sacks last season. He was acquired last March, giving the Rock Hill, S.C. native and former No. 1 overall pick a chance to play for his hometown team.

The Panthers acquired 26-year-old former Vikings outside linebackerPatrick Jones IIduring their early sprint through free agency. He had 7.0 sacks last year for the Vikings.

During the draft, they traded up to takeNic Scourtonin the second round andPrincely Umanmielenin the third, giving them a pair of young options at the position. Scourton doesn't turn 21 until the preseason, and Umanmielen just turned 23.

The Panthers still have a number of options at the position, includingD.J. WonnumandDJ Johnson, along withAmar Barno,Kenny Dyson,Thomas Incoom, and former first-rounderBoogie Basham.

Clowney was one of several transactions the Panthers made on Thursday. The club also placedJonathon Brookson the physically unable to perform list. The running back tore his ACL during Week 14 last season. By placing the second year back on PUP now, he will be out for the 2025 season. The move allows him time to get healthy after his second such tear in as many years.

Basketball to tight end convertColin Grangerwas waived with an injury settlement. The club also made the following moves:

The roster currently sits at 62 players. The releases come ahead of rookie minicamp, the arrival of eight drafted rookies and a slew of undrafted rookie free agents who will all have to be signed.
