FRISCO, TexasA week after the Cowboys traded a third and fifth round pick to the Steelers to acquire wide receiver George Pickens, quarterback Dak Prescott spoke for the first time about his new teammate and offensive weapon.
"I'm excited," Prescott said on The Ticket. "You turn on the tape and you see a guy that can catch the football. You put the football anywhere in his vicinity, very strong hands, more than a 50/50 catcher, he thinks it's his ball when it's in the air. I'm excited for him."
After months of the front office mentioning they we're looking for an "explosive" wide receiver two and in talks about "substantive" trades, the deal for Pickens finally came to fruition following the NFL Draft.
It fills another need on the Cowboys' roster beside CeeDee Lamb, something that Prescott knew was a gap that needed to be addressed.
"I know that we need some help in that position," Prescott said. "I know CeeDee needs some help, and I think when you have a guy like that, I heard George say it, it's hard to double team two guys."
From Pickens' perspective, the labels of wide receiver one and wide receiver two don't matter at all. He doesn't see any issues with having two number one caliber receivers on the field at the same time.
"You guys making a 1A and 1B and all this, honestly that's the first time I've heard of any of that stuff," Pickens said on May 8. "I feel like two receivers are kind of normal. When I used to watch football, there was always a good receiver and then there was another good receiver on the side of him. I just feel like we're going to work off each other very well."
Lamb and Pickens will likely garner most of the attention from opposing defenses, but Prescott feels the depth behind the two is more than enough to supplement the Cowboys offense and give him plenty of viable options.
"When you've got other guys whether it be [Jake Ferguson], Jalen Tolbert, [Jonathan] Mingo, guys who have had reps and know how to get open in the league, I think we're putting together a nice group of weapons." Prescott said.
Prescott, Pickens and the rest of the Cowboys will take the field for the first time in the regular season on Thursday, Sept. 4 against the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. Dallas will also play host to the Kansas City Chiefs in their annual Thanksgiving game, with the remainder of the NFL schedule set to be announced on Wednesday at 7 P.M. CDT.
