The Giants were on the field for the second official OTA on Wednesday. The first OTA was Tuesday, but it only lasted just under 45 minutes and there were no competitive team or 7-on-7 periods, which made today the first time this offseason the offense took the field against the defense.
Just as a reminder, players do not wear pads during OTAs and contact is not allowed, which makes it very hard to judge anything going on along the line of scrimmage. Brian Daboll called it a "passing camp" when he spoke about OTAs prior to the session, and I think that's the proper way for fans to think about it, too.
Here's what I saw from the sideline:
* All the competitive periods were in the red zone, which is by design to limit injury risk. As players continue to condition themselves in the spring, the strength and conditioning staff wants them to slowly work into running longer routes at top speed. The defense took advantage of the close quarters early in practice, forcing three straight incomplete passes during 7-on-7 drills. Deonte Banks knocked away the first pass of practice, followed by another for Micah McFadden. Tight defense by Jevon Holland forced the next incompletion. After a Russell Wilson scramble, the offense scored their first touchdown on a pass into the flat to Eric Gray.
* Dane Belton showed great awareness grabbing an interception with the next group, after a pass bounced off a receiver and he took it the other way for a potential pick six. Jaxson Dart got his first touchdown of OTA's on a pass into the flat to his former Ole Miss teammate Juice Wells.
* Tommy DeVito was extremely efficient in his limited snaps as the fourth quarterback in every period. On his first three pass attempts, he connected with undrafted free agent receiver Jordan Bly for touchdowns. His fourth attempt would have been a touchdown, but it was dropped in the end zone.
* The Giants put their quarterbacks on the move a lot during practice. Jameis Winston and Jaxson Dart both ran for touchdowns, with Dart having one by design on a read option and another on a scramble where he extended for the pylon to score. Winston also connected with Montrell Washington for a touchdown and had another one on a slick play where he faked a handoff to Wan'Dale Robinson, before faking a spin into a roll out and hitting Jalin Hyatt for one of his two touchdown catches on the afternoon. Dart hit him for a score on his second touchdown catch.
* Russell Wilson showed his touch on a perfectly placed fade ball to Darius Slayton, who tip-toed for a touchdown. Slayton also caught a touchdown from Wilson along the back line for a score.
* Dante Miller showed his speed on three separate plays, accelerating as though he was shot out of a cannon and beating defenders to the pylon for a rushing touchdown and two receiving touchdowns.
* Tyler Nubin, Art Green and Tre Hawkins all had pass break-ups. Micah McFadden closed practice with an interception at the goal line that could have been returned for a score if it was a game situation.
* The Giants worked several offensive linemen, specifically the younger ones, at various positions as they try to create versatility and depth.
