The Giants conducted their fifth OTA at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center on Tuesday. Temperatures were in the low 80s with a light breeze and sunny skies. It felt like a perfect day at training camp.
Here's what I saw from the sideline:
* Much like the previous OTAs, Tuesday's began with 7-on-7s with plays starting around the minus-30 yard line. Jameis Winston made the throw of practice with a perfectly placed lob on a wheel route to Devin Singletary down the right sideline. On the next play, Cor'Dale Flott scored one for the defense, knocking a pass away from Zach Pascal. Flott has done a nice job of coming down and breaking up passes in front of him so far this spring.
* A few plays later, Tommy DeVito made a perfect throw on a seam route to undrafted rookie tight end Jermaine Terry II, who ran away from the secondary for what would have likely been a long touchdown. It was a well-timed, perfectly placed ball on a line from DeVito.
* Later in practice, DeVito hit undrafted free agent wide receiver Jordan Bly with a pinpoint pass on a slant that just got past the defense. Bly quickly took it up-field for what would have been a long gain. With four quarterbacks in camp, it's difficult to get everyone enough reps, but DeVito has made the most of every opportunity he has gotten.
* Special teams were working on calling for fair catches, catching the ball, and gunners covering punts that come in around the 10-yard line. The return men had to decide whether or not to catch it at all, call for a fair catch, or run it back. The gunners had to position themselves correctly to prevent a return but also prevent the ball from bouncing into the end zone if the returner did not catch it.
* Dru Phillips, Tre Hawkins and Deonte Banks all had good coverage to prevent catches during team drills. Roy Robertson-Harris knocked down a pass at the line of scrimmage. Cory Durden had a sack.
* After finishing his work on the side as he rehabs a toe issue, Malik Nabers has been positioning himself behind the offense with the quarterbacks and coaches. He sticks his head into the huddle to hear the play calls and then is often talking to the quarterbacks between reps. He is still engaged even if he is not participating in the competitive periods.
* Jevon Holland had the play of practice for the defense, coming over from his deep safety spot and making a leaping interception on a pass towards the left sideline. A few plays later, Winston made an excellent throw to tight end Greg Dulcich on a flag route. Dulcich caught it and showed his speed by running up the right sideline for what might have been a score if he could have made pursuers miss inside the 10.
* In the final period, both Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux got into the backfield forcing plays to be blown dead on would-be sacks. Dane Belton got his hand on a deep pass down the left sideline.
* After meetings and a walkthrough on Wednesday, the Giants will return to the field on Thursday for their sixth (of 10) OTAs.
