The Chargers on Wednesday announced they have signedBud Dupreeto acontract extension.

The veteran outside linebacker joined the Bolts last offseason and posted 6.0 sacks in a rotational role in 2024 to go along with 10 quarterback hits, two passes defensed, a forced fumble and an interception.

So, why extend Dupree in early June?

Although is among the elder statesmen on the roster at 32 years old, he still showed plenty of juice while playing 546 defensive snaps last season.

And althoughKhalil Mackis certainly the alpha in the position room, don't overlook the impact Dupree made in his first season.

He helped mentor Tuli Tuipulotu, who posted a career-best 8.5 sacks in 2024. And Dupree will be called on to help guide fourth-round pick Kyle Kennard in his rookie season, too.

Tuipulotu is expected to take on a full-time starting role for the first time this season, but having Dupree as yourthird edge rusheris something most teams would jump at right away.

In golf terms, Dupree is certainly on the back nine of his career.

But he can still provide solid play and obviously believes in what the Chargers are building in Los Angeles as the Jim Harbaugh-Joe Hortiz Era enters Year 2.

"We feel like we took the right step this year, getting right back on track," Dupree said after the 2024 season. "Instead of making it to the playoffs, you want to win those playoff games and continue to have moments striving to get to the big game."

In order to make a deep playoff run in 2025, the Chargers will need contributions up and down their lineup.

Dupree should provide that, along with being a valued veteran leader on the defensive side of the ball.
