Shaquill Griffin, who spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Seahawks, is returning to Seattle.
The veteran cornerback signed with the Seahawks Wednesday, giving the Seahawks an experienced player to add competition and depth to an already strong position group led by returning starters Devon Witherspoon, Riq Woolen and Josh Jobe. Cornerback JT Woods was waived to make room on the 90-man roster.
A third-round pick out of Central Florida in 2017, Griffin started 53 games and appeared in 57 in his four seasons in Seattle, earning Pro-Bowl honors in 2019. He then signed with Jacksonville as a free agent, returning to his home state, and after two seasons with the Jaguars, he spent 2023 with Houston and Carolina before joining the Vikings last season.
In Minnesota last year, Griffin appeared in 17 games with three starts, recording two interceptions, six passes defense and 41 tackles. Over the course of eight seasons, Griffin has started 82 of 106 games played, recording 70 passes defensed, nine interceptions and 407 tackles.
While the Seahawks are excited about the players they're bringing back at cornerback, it was no secret that they were also looking at veteran options, including Griffin, who had a free agent visit earlier in the offseason, and Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said during his team's minicamp that the Seahawks would continue looking to add to that group.
"These are great battles going into the offseason," Macdonald said of his team's cornerback depth. "We are going to look to always improve our team in any aspect. We're always going to be out there and try to be in everything and chasing edges on making us better. The guys that are with us right now kind of in that three, four, five spot is exciting."
