The New York Mets designated veteran Austin Slater for assignment on Tuesday and recalled fellow outfielder Nick Morabito from Triple-A Syracuse.
The Mets also transferred right-hander Clay Holmes (right fibula fracture) to the 60-day injured list to make room for left-hander Anderson Severino, who had his contract purchased from Syracuse late Monday.
Slater, 33, signed as a free agent on April 27 after he was let go by the Miami Marlins. He batted .250 with one RBI over nine games with New York and hit .209 with two RBI in 21 total MLB games this season.
A veteran of 10 seasons, Slater is a career .247 hitter with 45 home runs and 186 RBIs for seven different clubs, including his first eight seasons with the San Francisco Giants.
Morabito, 23, is set to make his major league debut. He batted .253 with four home runs and 17 RBIs in 41 games for Syracuse this season and saw time in three games for Italy during this spring's World Baseball Classic.
Severino, 31, has just six major league appearances to his credit, all with the Chicago White Sox in 2022. A minor leaguer for nine seasons, Severino was 2-0 with a 1.04 ERA and four saves in 14 appearances (one start) with Syracuse this season.
Holmes, 33, was struck by a comebacker in Friday's game against the New York Yankees. He is 4-4 with a 2.39 ERA in nine starts this season and is 40-34 with a 3.53 ERA and 74 saves in 353 appearances (44 starts) for the Pittsburgh Pirates (2018-21), Yankees (2021-24) and Mets.
