Rookie Spencer Miles pitched a career-high 4 1/3 innings in his role as a bulk reliever and helped the Toronto Blue Jays earn a 2-0 victory over the host New York Yankees on Thursday night.
The Blue Jays won the final two games after seeing ninth-inning comebacks fall short against David Bednar and Camilo Doval on Monday and Tuesday. Including last season's ALDS, the Blue Jays are 13-8 in their past 21 games with the Yankees since the start of 2025.
George Springer hit his second homer of the series to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead. Springer went deep when he lifted Doval's 2-2 slider into the left field seats.
Daulton Varsho had an RBI double that caromed off the third base bag in the first inning off New York's Carlos Rodon (0-2). Varsho's hit scored Vladimir Guerrero Jr. who reached three times and stole second ahead of the 66.5 mph hit to left field.
Braydon Fisher and Adam Macko (1-0) preceded Miles by pitching 1 1/3 innings apiece.
Miles allowed two hits in the longest of his 14 career appearances since being selected from the Giants in the Rule Five draft. The 25-year-old right-hander also recorded a career-high six strikeouts and walked one in a 63-pitch outing -- seven more than his previous career-high.
Ernie Clement added three doubles for the Blue Jays, who won for the fourth time in six games.
After Miles finished his outing, Tyler Rogers retired Aaron Judge on a double play to end the eighth. Jeff Hoffman pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save and first since April 20.
Rodon made his first home start since undergoing surgery for loose bodies in his left elbow.
The left-hander allowed one run on three hits in five innings. Rodon struck out seven and walked three in a 94-pitch outing.
The Yankees lost for the ninth time in 13 games and fell 4 1/2 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East.
New York's Judge went 0-for-4. He was 1-for-15 in the series and failed to homer for the 10th straight game.
