Philadelphia Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly said his catcher was 'gonna be OK' after J.T. Realmuto took a fastball to the wrist Sunday.
X-rays came back negative after Realmuto departed the Phillies' road game against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the fourth inning, one inning after the hit-by-pitch.
'He's gonna be OK,' Mattingly told reporters after the Dodgers beat the Phillies 9-1. 'Obviously sore, couldn't really squeeze, wasn't gonna be able to swing and actually had a little trouble catching, too. So sore enough to get him out of there.'
Realmuto was hit on the left hand by a 97-mph fastball from Dodgers right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the third inning but remained in the game. He was replaced by Rafael Marchan on defense one inning later. Marchan had been on deck to bat for Realmuto in the top of the fourth.
The Phillies later announced that Realmuto had a wrist contusion.
Realmuto is batting .220 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 39 games this season. A three-time All-Star, the 35-year-old owns a .269 career batting average with 182 home runs and 686 RBIs in 1,412 games over 13 seasons with the Miami Marlins (2014-18) and Phillies. He was awarded the Gold Glove for National League catchers in 2019 and 2022, and Silver Slugger in 2018, 2019 and 2022.
