Blue Jays center fielder Daulton Varsho left Toronto's Friday game against the visiting Baltimore Orioles due to left wrist discomfort, but he might only miss a day or two of action.
Toronto manager John Schneider said postgame that Varsho first experienced problems with his wrist on Thursday, then felt it again in batting practice ahead of the Friday game. After Varsho came out of the contest, he underwent X-rays that were negative.
Schneider added that he was optimistic the inflammation would subside after one or two days of rest.
Varsho tried to play through the injury that was noticeable in his first-inning opening at-bat. He returned to the field for the top of the fourth inning even though Yohendrick Pinango had taken his place in the on-deck circle in the third.
Pinango did bat for Varsho in the bottom of the fourth and took over right field, with Nathan Lukes shifting from right to center.
Varsho, 29, is batting .256 this season following his 0-for-1 effort on Friday. He has five homers and 17 RBIs through 61 games in his fourth season in Toronto.
The Orioles, who won the game 13-3, lost a player to an injury, too. Designated hitter Samuel Basallo exited because of right abdominal discomfort, with his exit termed precautionary by manager Craig Albernaz postgame.
Basallo, 21, was lifted for pinch hitter Jeremiah Jackson in the sixth after going 0-for-2.
Basallo, who made his major league debut last season with Baltimore, is hitting .273 with nine home runs and 26 RBIs in 52 games this season.
