Casey Mize allowed one hit over 5 2/3 scoreless innings in his season debut as the Detroit Tigers defeated the host Seattle Mariners 4-1 on Tuesday night.
Riley Greene went 2-for-4 with a double and home run for the Tigers, who haven't trailed in claiming the first two games of the three-game series.
Mize, a right-hander who was the first overall selection in the 2018 MLB Draft, allowed a leadoff single to Victor Robles in the first inning and, an out later, walked Cal Raleigh.
Mize proceeded to retire the next 14 batters before issuing a leadoff walk to No. 9 hitter J.P. Crawford in the sixth. Mize got Robles to line into a double play to first baseman Spencer Torkelson to erase Crawford. Mize just missed low and away on a 3-2 sweeping breaking ball to Julio Rodriguez to end his night. It was Mize's third walk against six strikeouts.
Tigers relievers Beau Brieske, Will Vest and Tommy Kahnle combined for 3 1/3 hitless innings to finish off the one-hitter. Kahnle worked the ninth for the save.
Mariners right-hander Logan Gilbert (0-1) took the loss. Gilbert -- the 14th overall pick in 2018 -- gave up three runs on five hits in five innings with one walk and 10 strikeouts.
The Tigers scored multiple runs in the first inning for the second consecutive night.
Greene hit a one-out double to right field and scored an out later as Kerry Carpenter singled to right. Carpenter took second on the throw home and tallied when Colt Keith lined a single to left.
The Tigers extended their lead to 3-0 in the third. Zach McKinstry led off with a line-drive single to right and stole second. An out later, Torkelson hit a run-scoring double to right.
The Mariners got on the scoreboard in the seventh. Randy Arozarena drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Brieske. Arozarena took third on Luke Raley's groundout to the right side of the infield and tallied on Rowdy Tellez's sacrifice fly to left.
Greene led off the eighth with a homer to left-center off Trent Thornton to complete the scoring.
