Why it's likely viewed by analysts as a position of need

Browse any mock draft that has the Rams taking a quarterback, and most often the justification is planning for the future, withMatthew Staffordentering his 17th NFL season and taking a year-to-year approach. As seen in the playoffs, QB1 is still playing at a high level, but analysts believe this is the year for Los Angeles to draft a candidate to be Stafford's successor.

Like other positions, quarterback also had a player return on one-year deal in backupJimmy Garoppolo, so that may also factor into the decision of whether to take a quarterback this year.

Beyond the first round, ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. has the Rams selecting Ohio State's Will Howard 90th overall in the third roundin his and Field Yates' three-round mock.The Athletic's Dane Brugler has Los Angeles taking Syracuse's Kyle McCord 127th overall in the fourth round in hisfull seven-round mock draft.

NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah has Dart at No. 36 in his most recent overall Top 50 prospect rankings, which would put him as the No. 3 quarterback behind Colorado's Shedeur Sanders and Miami (Florida)'s Cam Ward.
